MELTING ICE Melting Ice was a site-responsive work realized in Frogtown, Los Angeles, as part of Illuminate the Night (2025), using ice as both a material substance and a charged social symbol. Installed within the river-adjacent urban landscape, the project unfolded through the gradual dissolution of ice forms, foregrounding duration, entropy, and collective agency.
Visitors were invited to take pinches of salt and throw them onto the central ice mass, accelerating its melting through their own physical action. The work shifted from passive observation to participatory intervention, making each small gesture—measured, intimate, and deliberate—a contribution to the work’s disappearance. Melting became not only a function of ambient heat and time, but of human choice, proximity, and involvement.
This participatory action carried a deliberate double resonance. Alongside its ecological reading—ice as a temporal material shaped by climate instability—the use of salt invoked histories of preservation, control, and extraction, while the work simultaneously responded to the contemporaneous presence of ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) operating in nearby neighborhoods, where raids and the threat of deportation had instilled fear and uncertainty among local residents. By offering salt to dissolve ice, the project staged a symbolic inversion: a collective, embodied act of undoing a force associated with hardness, authority, and terror.
Situated within Frogtown’s layered context of industrial infrastructure, informal ecologies, and immigrant communities along the Los Angeles River, Melting Ice became a space of shared witnessing and release. The work asked participants not simply to observe melting as metaphor, but to enact it—transforming a symbol of rigidity and fear into one of fragility, impermanence, and collective agency.
