The Bridge is a hypnotic video work by Marcos Lutyens that guides viewers through a trance-like induction into the elasticity of inner time and space. This 5-minute film invites audiences into a meditative state where choreographed movement, spoken suggestion, and shifting visual rhythms blend to evoke a shared somatic and emotional experience.
Set upon a symbolic bridge—an architectural and metaphorical structure—the piece features dancers of varying ages interacting with a chair (a cátedra), representing both dwelling and discipline. As the choreography unfolds, the viewer’s internal landscape begins to mirror the dancers’ gestures. The boundaries between inner and outer perception soften, revealing a layered exploration of memory, passage, and self-awareness.
At the core of The Bridge is the eye as a portal to the subconscious—an idea rooted in Lutyens’ earlier collaborations with MAXXI curator Chiara Ianeselli, particularly the Hypnotic Show developed with Raimundas Malašauskas for dOCUMENTA (13). In that project, close-up photographs of participants’ eyes were used to trace post-hypnotic impressions, a sensibility echoed in The Bridge, where visual and emotional depth emerge through gaze, gesture, and guided suggestion.
